As the barrel length decreases, there is less time for the expanding gases to accelerate the bullet before it exits the muzzle. However, is that drop in velocity really going to matter when it comes to shooting game? Probably not. 

Accuracy Considerations

Another aspect to consider is the impact of barrel length on accuracy. While longer barrels generally offer better inherent accuracy due to increased muzzle velocity and stability, short barrels can still deliver impressive precision under the right conditions. Modern advancements in rifle design, barrel manufacturing, and ammunition technology have mitigated some of the accuracy concerns associated with short barrels. Many hunters find that with proper rifle setup, consistent shooting techniques, and appropriate ammunition selection, short-barreled rifles can deliver satisfactory accuracy for hunting applications within practical ranges.

In the debate over barrel length and hunting rifle performance, there is no one-size-fits-all answer. While longer barrels may offer advantages in terms of velocity, energy, and long-range accuracy, short barrels provide maneuverability and versatility in tight hunting conditions and the ability to get the game you’re after, from deer to elk to wild turkey.
